There are noticeable changes in version 4.0 of Motorola Phone Tools. Phase 4 primary focus on usability and quality rather than new features.

Changes were made to target key problems detected in two phases of usability testing conducted in 2005. Changes were implemented where needed to help users navigate, and use the program with ease. Significant improvement in usability was observed at the second study due to
    - simplified installation
    - better instructions
    - standardization of screens
    - improved icons and
    - better error messaging

The first major difference is the look of the application. The main function panel icons are more defined and have easy to read captions. The slide-out function panel of the late version 3.0 will no longer slide. It is fixed with large descriptions of what each icon is for. This is the first thing our users will see. The rest of the changes are outlined below with descriptions of the changes.

Improved Sync error handling. In version 4.0 if there is a problem syncing using AT commands the software will skip the problematic record and log the skip in the summary log. This is to help support personnel to see where the problem is. It allows the user to be able to sync the rest of their records instead of stopping on the problem contact, as it did before.

Installshield improvements. License files were combined into one list, and a print button was added. We added default and custom options, and a link to quick start guide on set-up complete. We also validate hard disk space in default mode. This addressees those users that had trouble installing the application. We also provide the option to automatically launch the application and the user guide.

Simplified SMS window. For usability issues we have added send box for multiple addresses. We have simplified the correspondent window and striped formatting when pasting to SMS.

Simplified BlueTooth Pairing. Updated BT pairing wizard and simplified instructions based on feedback received from usability testing on version 3.0.

Easier and shorter install process. We have reduced the number of steps the user has to take in order to install the software.

Enhanced handling of unrecognized phones. A screen will now appear letting consumers know that the phone they have is not recognized. It also informs them that they may be running an older version of the software and recommends running the live update.

Improved Internet connection wizard. We have implemented improved fall-back connection logic that allows users a better understanding of what it is and how to set it up.

New video formats supported. We have implemented a conversion of .mov, .avi, .mpeg into .mp4 or .3gp or .rm optimized for our phones.

Improved Bluetooth support. There will now be a Warning if BlueTooth engine is not connected. When Motorola Phone Tools is launched it will check for a BlueTooth USB adapter and if it does not detect one it will inform the user.

Ability to switch BlueTooth profiles. This allows a user to switch between BlueTooth profiles allowing the use of multiple BlueTooth phones with one computer/application.

Better prompting to help users understand MPT actions. For example: When the user disconnects the phone from the cable it will prompt them with the message "Disconnecting modem please wait." Before it would just show a small disconnect icon on the skin of Motorola Mobile Phonetools.

Multimedia Additions. Added double-click transfers for both windows. Improved cropping and song clip selection. Standardization of windows helps usability for example: the send window looks the same look as SMS window.

Increased OBEX Timeout helps read larger files. This enables the multimedia center extra time to read the files on the phone, should the phone contain a large amount of data (which takes longer to read).
